Be on the slopes an hour after you land when you take an American Airlines flight to Salt Lake City, Utah. After a day of fun in the great outdoors, head back to this cosmopolitan city for a night on the town when you fly to Salt Lake City with American Airlines.
Ski one or all four of Salt Lake City’s world-class resorts just outside of town. You'll find the legendarily steep and deep slopes of Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort and the skiing-only Alta Ski Area in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Up Big Cottonwood Canyon are Solitude Mountain Resort, home to a top Nordic area, and Brighton Ski Resort, with its excellent ski and snowboard school.
Explore Temple Square, the most sacred spot of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There is plenty to see and learn here, whether on the free tours or exploring on your own, from the soaring architecture of the Temple itself to the fascinating history of the Mormon pioneers who settled Salt Lake City in the 1850s.
Go under the dome at the majestic Utah State Capitol, a masterwork of Utah granite and Georgia marble completed in 1916. Under the 165-foot Rotunda you'll see historic murals, sculptures, and a massive chandelier. Next door is the Pioneer Memorial Museum, featuring artifacts both historical (personal effects of church leader Brigham Young) and unusual (don't miss the hair wreaths and two-headed calf).
Go beyond the resorts in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons for serious skiing and snowboarding. Head straight to the chairlifts at the three resorts in Park City—Park City Mountain Resort, the Canyons Resort, and skiers-only Deer Valley Resort—as well as a charming and historic Main Street. You’re in powder heaven, as 11 of Utah’s 14 ski resorts are within an hour of the airport.
Cross the causeway to Antelope Island State Park, located on the largest island in the Great Salt Lake. The family will love an outdoor adventure here. Take a look at the wildlife, which includes a 500-strong herd of buffalo. Hike the island’s trails and end the day floating in the lake...an easy task thanks to the high salinity.
Book your flight to Salt Lake City with American Airlines today to see some of Salt Lake City’s best attractions.
Go off the beaten path in Salt Lake City with American Airlines to visit the University of Utah campus and its museums, and then see the unusual folk art at Gilgal Sculpture Garden or the truly enormous Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine. And whatever you do, don't forget your golf clubs. American will be with you every step of the way.
Take the family to the University of Utah's campus, home to a pair of museums. Start with the standout Utah Museum of Fine Arts, featuring an excellent collection of works by European masters alongside 20th-century American lithographs and photography. Kids will be wowed by the dinosaur exhibits at the Natural History Museum of Utah, which reopened in a stunning new building in late 2011.
Snap a photo of the unusual folk art at the Gilgal Sculpture Garden. Tucked into a residential neighborhood near Trolley Square, the sculpture garden is a public city park that showcases the works of Thomas Child, Jr., a mason who used a torch to cut and carve his own visionary works of art into stone.
Hit the links at one of the city's nine municipal courses. Salt Lake City is one of the top golfing destinations in the West, from the rolling 18-hole Bonneville to the 9-hole (and aptly named) Forest Dale. There are two 18-hole courses in Parley's Canyon east of town at Mountain Dell, where you'll stand a good chance of seeing some wildlife during your round.
Add romance to the menu at Salt Lake City's ever-growing list of great restaurants. Make a reservation at historic and beautifully rustic Log Haven, up Millcreek Canyon, offering waterfall views and fine dining; or La Caille, where you'll be served authentic French cuisine in a chateau at the opening of Little Cottonwood Canyon.
Gawk at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Mine, a huge copper operation southwest of Salt Lake City that is the world's largest open-pit mine. Nearly a mile deep, the mine is still operating, so you'll get to observe some seriously massive trucks in action as well as the dizzying view from the visitor center, 2,000 feet above the mine's floor.
